2012 June 30 to July 1 Tagaytay

Yesterday was our anniversary (Happy Anniversary, mommy!) and we went to our customary Tagaytay trip. I was actually planning a surprise drive past the Sta. Rosa exit (the expressway exit to Tagaytay) and proceed all the way to Batangas and then Laiya. Unfortunately, last minute events led us to  just go to Tagaytay.

We first tried Discovery Country Suites (where we stayed for our wedding). It was fully booked (Note to self: Book for next year already). We then went to Moon Garden (where we had our wedding reception). Again, it was fully booked. Michelle researched for other hotels and we ended up at Lake Hotel. Good choice. Nowhere near as good as Country Suites in my opinion but still quite good.

The Lake Hotel is not too big so it’s not as busy as, say Chateau Royale. But there’s a good range of rooms to choose from. Some even have a view of Taal. But even if your room doesn’t, you can simply go to the lobby or the pocket garden for a good view. The staff was nice, friendly, and very accommodating. There’s also WiFi (common these days) in the rooms and lobby, but it’s slooow (also common unfortunately). Overall, the hotel has that nice and upscale feel.

For dinner, Michelle, suggested Bag of Beans which has branched out to more than just coffee and dessert. It’s actually rated quite highly in some reviews but personally I found the food (we ordered porterhouse steak and pink salmon steak) to be just average and the crew not very well-trained in protocol (e.g. how to inform the customer that a table has a time-based consumable rate without sounding condescending). Transition pains, maybe.

Back to the hotel, buffet breakfast is complimentary and they let kids below 5 years old for free. There’s a wide choice of good dishes to choose from and you can eat to your heart’s content. Unlike, say Chateau Royale :P

Overall, it was a good weekend. Tagaytay remains one of the best places to spend a weekend. Probably even one of the best places to settle down. And I’m not the only one thinking that: Fully booked.

Chateau Royale Groupon

I’m not really into groupons (group buy coupons) because of all the fine print and compromises that come with them. Last year, a groupon was offered for Chateau Royale. I’ve visited the place before (emphasis on visited) and I wasn’t impressed. But supposedly, they had vastly improved so we got groupon. That was the best bit.

As I expected, booking the reservation was a challenge. Weekends, especially the weekends we actually wanted to go, were fully booked. To Chateau Royale’s credit, they extended the booking period for the groupon a few times. I eventually settled for May 19.

Lifetrons Worldwide Travel Adapter

Got this from the in-flight duty free shop ($36) because it was more expensive at the airport duty free shop (NT$1400 or around $48). And then I find out that similar travel adapters are just around $20-$30 from Amazon.

Still, it’s not so bad. It’s your normal travel adapter with 4 different types of retractable prongs and as many sockets. It’s a bit chunky (see photo comparing it to standard iPhone charger) and not easily pocketable but with a gadget bag should be no problem. It has a smooth satin finish that looks pretty and resists fingerprints. But it is not scratch-resistant and can easily get marred or rubbed off.

The best thing about it is that it has two USB charging ports. And they’re not just ordinary ports, they are iPad-compatible (1000mA). The USB ports are actually the primary reason why I got this adapter. You’re supposed to be able to fast-charge two iPads but since I have only one, I wasn’t able to verify this. But being able to charge a phone, a tablet, and a laptop at the same time? That’s good enough for me!

Serentina

Yesterday, we celebrated Michelle’s birthday with her family at Serentina in Bulacan. Actually, the place is officially named “Serentina Estates” but I have this maybe simplistic notion that estate pertains to a big piece of land, and it isn’t :P But that’s not a bad thing. There’s a two-story open building that can be used for events. The building is well appointed with a bar and restrooms on both floors. In front of the building is a small pool. The pool has a shallow kiddie pool section and Jeanne had fun wading in it. Below the pool area, there’s a wide garden with a big tree adorned with Capiz shell lamps as the centerpiece. Off to the corner is a gazebo which is where we stayed. The place is open to the public for swimming and as a venue for events. But yesterday, there was only us and the whole place was practically our private garden. I love that peace and quiet. I’ve always dreamed of a private garden like this. Someday.
